Stonewall in the Sunshine State
NSD News Update
This weekend, Stonewall Democrats from around Florida gathered in Key West to construct strategy for the growth of the LGBT Democratic movement in the Sunshine State. NSD Executive Director Eric Stern gave the meeting's keynote speech, setting out a plan for the LGBT community to fight back against right-wing attacks and organize to build support for fair-minded Democratic candidates in the 2006 Elections.
The forum hosted a conference call for Stonewall members with all three of the 2006 Democratic Gubernatorial candidates. The candidates - Congressman Jim Davis, Former State Party Chair Scott Maddox and State Senator Rod Smith all called for opposition to a potential ballot initiative in 2006 that would enshrine marriage discrimination into the state constitution.
The National Stonewall Democrats pledged to work in solidarity with the GLBT Caucus of the Florida Democratic Party to elect Democrats up and down the ballot in 2006, turn out Florida's LGBT vote in unprecedented numbers and mount an aggressive effort to build coalitions against the anti-family amendment the right-wing will put on the ballot in 2006.
